iMovie will not import iphone videos

Why will iMovie not import videos made on iphone? And why can apple support not help resolve the issue? It's very frustrating having compatibility issues when all components are apple. I updated the software on the mac as advised and still have the problem. I should not have to install additional software to individually convert video files to a different format.

Have you tried dragging the clips into an iMovie project timeline or event? That should work.

If you need to convert the clips, you can use the free download Handbrake to convert the clips to H.264, Mp4/AAC, Do that even if the codec already is indicated to bb Mp4/AAC. Re-rendering often cures the issue.

You can get Handbrake here:

https://handbrake.fr/

A simple way to do it is to open Handbrake and do a File/Open Source. Navigate to your video and choose it as the source from the resulting screen. Then do File/Start Encoding. Wait a couple of minutes for the conversion to complete. Then save and import the converted clip into iMovie. It should work fine.

HI, Frustrated-1-1,

You didn't describe what procedure you used to try to import to iMovie, nor the format in which the videos were recorded. You can go into your iPhone Photo settings and select Auto for transferring to a Mac. That will give you the most compatible format. See if iMovie will import that.

Instead of importing directly into iMovie, try exporting the videos from your iPhone to your Mac using the Air Drop feature. Air Drop will need to be enabled on both devices. The devices must be less than 30 feet apart. The videos will import into the Downloads folder on your Mac, from where you can drag them into iMovie.

Thanks for the reply! I moved the videos from my phone to the mac via USB cable and then tried importing to iMovie from the mac. They show up in the folder, but i cannot select them for import. I can play them on the mac from the folder so i know the video files saved correctly but i assume iMovie cannot use the quicktime movie file. I'm sure i just need to convert the file to a different format but not sure what software i need to get to do that and I'm not very knowledgable on anything computer related unfortunately.
