Eliminating malware and extraneous applications

I am trying to clean up my son's MacBook. It has malware (search baron) and some applications (not Apple) that I want to eliminate. Also 4,000 emails of no value. I am planning on reinstalling the operating system it came with (vintage 2016). Does this clean out everything on the unit. Or should I perform an "erase" first?
