I am using Photos 1.5 on my iMac (OS 10.11.6). Can I update to a more recent version - and if so, how?

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and depending on which iMac model you have, download High Sierra or Catalina. If El Capitan is your model's maximum OS, no.
