Clamshell Mode without charging

How can use clamshell mode without having to keep the power cord in? I have an external monitor so it connected to my Mac via HDMI.

You can't use closed display mode without power.

Personally I would keep the lead connected to keep the charge cycles low and avoid crashing out with a flat
