Can I use clamshell mode without the ac plugged in

Is it possible to use clamshell mode without the power adapter plugged in on a 2017 MBP? I am using an HDMI cable to the monitor. I would prefer NOT to use an app to accomplish this.

Using MBP with External Monitor in Clamshell Without Power Adapter Just bought a Samsung M5 monitor that is AirPlay compatible. Using it with my 2020 MBP with the lid closed works flawlessly as long as the power adapter is connected to the MBP. Unplug the adapter and I lose the monitor. I know how to do it and that you have to be connected to power when doing this, but I was wondering if connecting it to power could potentially cause issues with battery health along the line.
