Markup not saving annotations on iPad PDFs

when I markup files or PDFs in the files app on my iPad, using iCloud Drive, sometimes the highlights don’t save and sometimes they do. I can’t see any sort of save feature and I don’t understand why this is happening.

Markups on pdf in iCloud disappear I use my iPad (2019 12.9” pro) to annotate PDFs. The documents are all in iCloud and I open/annotate them in Files. Multiple times I have been pages into annotating a document and all my notes suddenly disappear and I am unable to reverse the action or get them back. This is infuriating as it has deleted hours worth of work. How to I stop this from happening or get my edits back when it has happened?

Preview App Prevent Me From Highlighting I have a PDF and I use Preview app to add text, highlight, underline, insert an arrow, box etc and I have been doing this for many years and it is my best companion app for learning and working. I do this 99% on my desktop. This morning I was rushing to finish reading a PDF, and so I open it up on my iCloud drive on my iPhone XR. I use the highlighter to highlight a short sentence. Close it. When I return to my desk, the changes made on the iPhone appear on my desktop Preview app. That is great. The power of cloud technology. But I am also disappointed that I am no longer able to use the highlighter on the Preview app anymore. Is this because I edit it on the iOS device and they are not compatible? Does anyone have experienced this before?

i think I figured it out... I would have the highlight button open the whole time, including when I exited the pdf. It seems like if you close out of the markup menu and highlight tooltip, then it will say “saving file”

in short ... exit whatever markup menu you are using to save.
