Back Up Failure

Have a Mac (2019) with latest OS Catalina 10.15.6 installed. The Time Machine can't backup because it is "read only." How did that happen? The iomega external hard drive is formatted to Apple File System (APFS). It failed First Aid in Disk Utility. Before I erase it, format, and back up anew, any suggestions?

Alright. Thanks.

Decided to erase it, reformat, then back up anew. Found when I went to erase it, it was already formatted to MacOS Extended Journaled. Ran first aid a third time and "read only" error message came up again. I looked closely at the information on the screen for the backup disk and saw it's not mounted.

Another bit of information I saw is most likely the source of the problem. The capacity is 998.97 GB and the amount available is Zero KB. It's a 10 year old external hard drive. Time to buy a new one with greater capacity, right? Suggestions on which brand, where to purchase, or an article or website with current information would be much appreciated.
