I am unable to hear sound from my MacBook Air. I've gone to the system preferences and made sure sounds and "built in" was selected. Any other ideas?

Resetting NVRAM could solve sound related issues.

Sometimes i need to mute, unmute my macbook in sounds, system preferences

Go into Terminal and type in the command "sudo killall coreaudiod". This will force your audio drivers to restart.
