Erase Fail High Sierra

Mid 2011 iMac will not restart to disk Utility upon holding down various combinations of keys (command r, etc). Merely brings up the log in screen. Upon logging in and bringing up disk Utility Macintosh hard drive and hdd (original) are grayed out. First aid shows no problems also tried partioning, which failed.
