I seem to recall having this problem a couple years ago, can't remember the workaround, and not able to find any solutions online. No amount of retyping or reformatting, will get rid of the highlight. Maddening!

Its one of two things:
1 - you double click the text and its showing a white selection highlight
Goto: Apple Menu > System Preferences > General > click on the Highlight Colour dropdown menu:
2 - the text box background fill is white (Inspector - Format - Style - Fill)
