Missing folders from desktop

Hello. Turned on my MacBook Pro lap top and several folders were suddenly missing from my desktop. Any suggestions how to find them?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.14

Verify you are logged into the correct user account, from the  drop down menu in the upper left.

If you inadvertently turned on iCloud Drive:
