2010 MacBook Pro is stuck on boot screen even though Disk Utility detects the hard drive

My 2010 MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard stopped working several years ago when I had to shut it off after it became completely unresponsive. When I restarted it, it has always been stuck on the boot screen with the loading circle thing. I opened Disk Utility and it was able to detect the hard drive and the correct amount of storage that had been occupied before this happened. Even after trying to fix the hard drive with Disk Utility, it still won't boot. The computer had past issues from a water spill and had multiple parts replaced over time but there was no sign of failure in the two years prior to it not working. So, is this a hard drive failure or potentially a failure of another component like the RAM sticks? Would cleaning the internals possibly help? Or should I just give up and restore the laptop with a new SSD?
