In Mail, if I delete my archived emails, have I lost them forever?

Yesterday I tried to make room in Mail by deleting my archived emails. I checked my Inbox folder to see if they were deleted from there as well, and as far as I could tell, they were not. Today I once again checked my Inbox folder and they had disappeared. Are they gone for good?
