Adding FX to titles only problem

I can't add video fx to my titles only in Final Cut Pro X without it also affecting my video footage below in the timeline as well. Anyone else having this issue? I'm running Mac 10.15.4 and Final Cut 10.4.8

It depends on the Title you use. Title templates are made with different methods — one is where a "copy" of the storyline (technically, the accumulated "layers" of media below the title); another is where the background is "generated" (completely covers whatever is below the title with graphic elements); the other has no "background" - nothing under the title is copied. It's not an exact explanation, but it's about as close as I can come to what is going on.

The "Basic Title" has no background and does not copy storyline media. Adding effects to a title like this (and there are a few others) will only affect the text of the title and nothing else in the scene.

What video effects are you trying to add and to which titles?
