Desktop Folders Disappeared

I haven't used my MacBookAir since last Friday (6/12) and did not shut it down over the weekend. I attempted to use it this morning (6/15) and my entire Desktop was wiped clear. No folders left anywhere. No one else has access to my personal MacBookAir.

Can someone help me understand what happened and how I can recover these folders, as I need most of them for my job?

Thanks,

Wil52

Is it possible that they are in iCloud? Check Systempreferences, AppleID, iCloud, iCloudDrive: Options. Is Desktop folder and Documents selected?
