MBP to external Apple monitor

I have a MacBook Pro (2016) connected to an external Apple monitor using a lightning to USB-C adapter. Monitor spanning was working well, then starting last Monday, it could no longer span my display. What is wrong? How do I fix this?

try turning off "displays have separate spaces" here:
