Try rebooting the laptop.

Try an SMC reset.

Does it work while in Safe Mode? If so, then you have a software issue affecting the keyboard backlight.

If the light sensor located in the Display Assembly is bad or the cable for it is bad it will prevent the keyboard backlight. Or you have a keyboard failure. Either way it will require a hardware repair.
