why do I have to list a credit card for a 1 year free trial for Apple TV?

You do need a valid payment method to start a subscription, for the period after the trial, but a credit card is is just one of the options (in most countries or regions). A credit card would probably also be the most convenient payment method.

Additionally, the payment method for subscriptions should be able to be used with automatic periodic billing, i.e. without asking user approval for each billing cycle. Subscriptions auto-renew until canceled.

Payment methods should be valid for the country or region as specified for the Apple ID account. For cards, that means that the card issuer should be in the same country or region, as well as your address for the card. Some cards may need approval from the issuer for automatic billing, or for international use (e.g. Apple financial office in another country). Other payment methods are often also localized.
