I'm using a Macbook Air 2017 and suddenly my Airplay won't work. The icon isn't showing up at the top of my screen and when I go into Preferences, it says Airplay Display is off, but there's no option to turn it on. The only option in the dropdown list is "off".
I'm running the latest version of Catalina.
Any suggestions?

Yep, its on.
These directions don't help because they require me accessing the airplay icon... which I can't access. That's my whole problem.
Mine is the same as yours, with bluetooth on and my airplay tv icon shows on the top bar on the right hand side.
So not sure what else to suggest, maybe try apple support
