Volume on Apple TV not working

When I try to adjust volume from my Apple TV remote, the light on box flashes but volume doesnt change and the volume indicator on screen doesnt show up.

This was an inconsistent problem, that has now been permanent.

I've tried resetting (Menu + Plus button), I've tried resetting device, etc. NOTHING has worked.
