2008 Macbook Pro

I am trying to get some important information off my 2008 macbook pro after my backup hard drive was lost. When I turn on the computer, the mail app opens and a pop up states the date has been reset to Jan 1, 2008. My mouse and all keys work/mouse will move about the screen, however I am unable to click on anything to exit windows, open apps, etc. I can search in Finder with shortcuts, but I cannot seem to actually open anything up. How do I resolve this? I am guessing it has to do with the date reset but how to I fix this?

Hello,

Unfortunately it sounds like your Mac’s hard disk is failing. Try using Target Disk Mode to connect your Macintosh to another Macintosh to transfer its data.
