Mail preview pane

The preview pane in Apple Mail moved from the bottom to the side. When I've searched for how to fix it, I keep seeing references to clicking on the "Classic" view in preferences, but I don't see any such thing there (I've looked at screen captures and they don't match what I have in Catalina." How do I move it back to the bottom?
