Mail Messages been deleted

How do I stop my mail server (gmail) deleting messages from my Mail IN box on my iMac?

If I login in and delete/clear messages on my gmail account when I'm on the internet, the messages that have been download to my Mail IN box disappear. How do I save these messages?

Yes, that is the way IMAP works, computer mirrors what is on the Server.

If you want to keep some make some On My Mac Mailboxes & copy them there
