Printer driver Samsung ML 2580 does not work on OS X Catalina

I am unable to use my printer Samsung ML 2580 after upgrading to OS X Catalina.

Printer is connected to USB port.

I have updated the driver.

Printfile is generated. Print queue showing green, then orange in use (this is normal), then sending data to printer. Then nothing; print file disappears and does not print.

What's next?

Oh, of course, it’s not Samsung/HP's fault they have abandoned their product and refuse to update their drivers. It’s always Apple’s fault. Okay, we got it. By the way Samsung/HP has known for at least two years that Catalina was coming yet Samsung/HP decided not to put the effort in to support their customers’ older printers. And another ‘by the way’ for you. Apple doesn’t develop or monitor printer drivers, they never have. Apple includes the drivers the printer manufacturers supply to them.

Can you please explain once more why this is Apple’s fault?

But there is a solution. Downgrade from Catalina back to your previous version of macOS where your printer did work. Using your Time Machine Backup it’s not that hard.

Revert your Mac to a previous macOS version

The last printer drivers for the ML-2580 series was released for macOS High Sierra in Fall 2017. These are very unlikely to be 64-bit or supported in Catalina.

Try this for your existing USB connection:

  1. Right/Control-click on your Printer entry in the Print & Scan panel. Choose Reset printing system…. This will remove the printer from that panel, and prompt you to re-add the printer.
    1. By default, it will offer you the ML-2580 series drivers, so choose that, and add the printer back.
  2. See if you can print something now

If your ML-2580 is a ML-2580N model, disconnect the USB connection, and connect an Ethernet cable to the ML-2580N, and then to switch or router, and again, with it poweed on, re-add the device. This time, see if Apple's Bonjour service detects the ML-2580 on your network. If it does, select it, attempt to re-add the printer, This time, see if AirPrint, or Auto-Select menu items are available, and If Air Print support is offered, choose it, and re-=add the printer. Apple's AirPrint is built into Catalina, and does not require Samsung software or drivers. If you can configure with AirPrint, then attempt a test print.

Thanks for your advise. I applied both your instructions: reinstalling through USB (didn't, the printer driver is detected and installed, but fails test print "filter error - stopped"), through Ethernet (again Bonjour finds the printer driver, installs it, but doesn't generate a print file (even a 25KB text file is not prepared to spool), AirPrint does not recognize the printer which probably confirms the device is too old to contain it. I then connected to Samsung to find driver updates but there they only support until OS X 10.10 or so.

Stupid to see that Apple doesn't invest in downwards compatibility.

No one invests in downwards compatibility in an industry that changes every six months. Also, Apple doesn't make printers or printer drivers, so you should blame Samsung for not continuing to upgrade their printer drivers for compatibility with each new version of macOS. Apple provides them with all the needed information to update their drivers. They chose not to do so for your model. You pointed your finger at the wrong target.

Apple has zero control over vendor driver delivery, or support continuance decisions. The HP acquisition of Samsung's printer division has probably not improved this situation either. Apple has its hands full with its own current inventory of future, and ongoing product support cycles — which it does control.

My Samsung ML-2950 series is fortunately supported by AirPrint, even though it does not appear in the listing of AirPrint supported Samsung printers.
