I just received an automated phone call from am “800” number saying suspicious activity was on my iCloud account and I should not log in and do any secure banking. How do I know if this was a “true” call or a scam?

It was a scam. Apple doesn't make unsolicited phone calls. If there was a problem with your account you would be notified when you attempt to login, including when attempting to log into this forum.
