After AppleCare+ warranty expired, what should I do to provide more protection for the phone damage?

There is nothing more you can do using Apple's resources.
Perhaps you can do something using your homeowner's or renter's insurance (but probably not).
You possibly could have done something before AppleCare expired. It's too late now.
