setting up apple watch to new Iphone

I'm trying to set up my apple watch (which was being used by Iphone 6) to a new I phone XR. When I try and set up the phone after pairing it asks me for my apple id and password. I'm sure it's wanting an old id/password from the 6 but I can't get at that information. I've reset my Apple id and password in settings, icloud, and messages but it still will not take my apple id and password. Any help would be appreciated.

You need your old apple id to remove the activation lock off the phone so that you can pair it with the new phone,without that apple id there is nothing you can do.
