itunes to mp3 conversion

When I try the suggestions for creating an mp3 version of songs do the preferences/import settings/mp3 format selection; I go to file/convert and none of the choices are active.

The File/Convert options will only be available if you have a song selected.

Note that Convert ID Tags will only be highlighted for particular songs.
