Can an ipad use an Apple USB-C to Lightning Cable if it came with an Apple USB-A to Lightning Cable?

Hi,

Can a 6th Gen ipad use an Apple USB-C to Lightning Cable? I want to plug my iPad into my MacBook Air but the MacBook only has USB-C ports and the iPad has an Apple USB-A to Lightning Cable with it. I'm thinking of purchasing an Apple USB-C to Lightning Cable if the connection will work.
