Unable to access mail in time machine backup

I have attempted to restore an email in time machine, I have retrieved other lost files by opening the folder, then time machine, going back to a date before deleting and then passing restore. Unfortunately after opening Mail and selecting inbox, then time machine, there are no messages to view, no way to go back in time, and the restore button is unlit. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am using a Lacie 2TB mobile hard drive after the failure of my Airport time capsule.

If you are using IMAP then your email is on your mail server and not on your machine.

Once you have a working machine just log into the mail program of your choice and your mail should download .

If you went to a library on a machine you never used before you can still view your email on the server.

Thanks, still confused, if the files are only on the server how can I access them when not on the web. One of those unfathomable (for me) problems. Thanks anyway,

Sorry! this is where I show my ignorance. I had presumed that the mail came into my inbox, from here I use several folders for saving them, I can still access my mail when disconnected from the internet. I use BT and I believe it is an IMAP service.

Thanks, sorry still a bit thick, I realise I can access the emails on the servers web site, but if I can access in Mail, why aren't they in Time Machine?

Time Machine only backs up files stored on the computer.
