My Mac automatically went to sleep after me not using it for a while, now it won’t turn on. I can’t fully turn it off because the thing I was working on before it went to sleep was not saved and I will lose all progress.

Occasionally my mini won't wake to a key press (from a wired keyboard). When that happens, a short press of the power button on the rear of the mini has always successfully woken it. Have you tried that?
