I upgraded to Catalina but did not know my old microsoft documents that I guess are 32 bit would disappear. How do I get all my documents back? If I upgrade to the new microsoft app will I get them back?

Your documents will still be there unless a problem occured, but you'll need Office 2016 or newer, LibreOffice, or similar software to open them; 32-bit applications can't be run in Catalina.
If a problem did occur, restore them from a backup.

Thank you! I actually found the documents in my time machine and one of them was in Pages. I am muddling through this but I think I will get it done. Thanks for your help!
Also Pages can open, read, edit and export Word files as .doc files.
So you have a lot of options. I use LibreOffice and it works very well with all Office files.

The files are just files. It is apps that are 32 bit that won't work. Office 2016 (updated), Office 2019, and Office 365 all work with Catalina. LibreOffice also is 64 bit.
