How can I attach an HDMI cord to a thunderbolt 2 connection? What adapter is needed. I am trying to hook up a monitor to my Macbook air 2017

You need an adapter that converts Thunderbolt 2 to HDMI. You should find one at the Apple Store or at Amazon.
