I have searched everywhere, including this group, and I am only finding answers that are not helpful: it says everywhere that in iCloud preferences you can undo the deletion, but the option is just not there! Please help. Thanks in advance.
MacBook Air 13", macOS 10.14
Open system preferences in Mac and click on iCloud , on the bottom right corner click on manage .
Click on photos and turn off and delete .
The photos will be deleted , a mail will be received immediately in IMAP account .
iCloud Photos has been disabled on all your devices and new photos and videos are no longer uploading to iCloud.
There are currently 50 photos and 0 videos in your iCloud Photos
Original format, full resolution versions of your photos and videos are not stored on your devices. You must download your full resolution photos and videos to at least one device before they are deleted from iCloud Photos in 30 days.
To download your photos and videos to an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with iOS 8 or later:
1. Connect to a power source and Wi-Fi.
2. Go to settings, tap on your account, tap iCloud, and then select Photos.
3. Tap Download and Keep Originals.
If your library exceeds the storage space available on your device, you can download your photos and videos to your Mac or PC from iCloud.com.
If you do not want iCloud Photos turned off, you can turn it right back on your iOS device:
1. Go to Settings and tap iCloud.
2. Select Storage and tap Manage Storage.
3. Select iCloud Photos and Undo Delete.
Your profile shows you are using 10.14.6 , but in Mac OS catalina 10.15.2 mail will also be received , it can be directly turned on .

Thanks Ria. I'm afraid that I'm seeing something else then you: going into System preferences I don't see an option anywhere to click on AppleID. I can go into iCloud and uncheck the Photos box there, but then it still says: "iCloud photos will be deleted form iCloud in 18 days. Photos and videos are no longer uploading. You can cancel this deletion from iCloud preferences". But where??
Do you mean that I must uncheck that box? If I do that it says this: "If you turn off iCloud Photos, photos and videos that have not been fully downloaded will be removed from this Mac. These items will still be available on other devices using iCloud.
To ensure all items are on this device, allow the update to finish before turning this off."
And if I do that, am I not disconnecting totally? What I want to do is reconnect my photos to iCloud (I have purchased more memory)...
OK, that's why you couldn't see the option to click on AppleID.
You did good to click on iCloud in SystemPreferences.
I've you already have bought more iCloud storage, there won't be a problem. You don't need to uncheck the box.
Just wait until the download is finished.
You can check how much iCloud storage you have: SystemPreferences, iCloud (I think at the bottom of the window: iCloud storage)
Do you have enough storage on your Mac itself?: You can check it here: Click on the apple icon on the menubar, click on 'About this Mac' and click on Storage (or in Finder: right-click on your HD and left-click on Get info)

Surf to iCloud.com and log in if necessary . Open Foto's. At the sidebar you'll find Recent deleted. Deleted icloudfoto's are kept there for maximum 40 days. Then they're gone

On the menubar, click on the apple icon
Click on System Preferences
On the right side of the window (on top) click on AppleID
Uncheck Foto's
Am I right you are not on Catalina, but on Mojave?
You can check that: On the menubar, click on the apple icon and click on 'About this Mac'. Does it say Catalina or Mojave?

Thanks a lot! This last bit solved my problems. I don't know why, but I had been there previously and did not see the photos app there, but now I did. Relieved.. :-)
