I am trying to change my apple ID email address

I am trying to change my apple ID email address. I had an old apple ID that I do not use anymore so I deleted it to use the email on my main ID but it does not work. When I try to change it they say "This email address is not available".

Is there anything I can do? I really want to be able to use my main email because I never use the email that my apple ID is connected to..

There have been posts by people who have contacted Apple Support and they were told that if you delete an ID associated with the address, you can never reuse the address. You will need to get another e-mail address to use as your Apple ID.
