I've downloaded all the music from my iMac to my iPhone X using the music app (not the cloud). After the sync, nothing will play. There's a bar at the bottom that says "Not Playing" no matter which album or song I choose. Wondering what I should do - is it some setting I've neglected?

If I understand correctly, the Music app is not able to play music that was synced to the iPhone.
Are you able to play Apple Music content?

Thanks, Starr - but I don't have Apple Music on the phone. This is my downloaded music. I fixed this issue by removing the music and reloading it. All working now.
