Downloaded music won't play on my phone

I've downloaded all the music from my iMac to my iPhone X using the music app (not the cloud). After the sync, nothing will play. There's a bar at the bottom that says "Not Playing" no matter which album or song I choose. Wondering what I should do - is it some setting I've neglected?

If I understand correctly, the Music app is not able to play music that was synced to the iPhone.

Are you able to play Apple Music content?


If an app unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open
