Upgrading to 10.13 High Sierra

I've got a early '09 Mac Pro 10.12 6 Sierra. I'm trying to upgrade to 10.13 but no luck. 32gig of RAM, 2-2.93Ghz 8-core processors and a 240GB SSD. Tried to find a fresh installer but no luck. MacTracker says that this model will only go to 10.11. Model identifier should be 10,4 but it reads as 10,5. Been trying to find the installer for 10.13 NOT 10.13.x, but no luck

Help?!

The Installer would come as 10.13.6, but just called High Sierra.

Mac Hardware Requirements

For details about your Mac model, click the Apple icon at the top left of your screen, choose About This Mac. These Mac models are compatible with macOS High Sierra:

  • MacBook (Late 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Mid 2010 or newer)
  • iMac (Late 2009 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Mid 2010 or newer)

Where are you seeing this Model 10,5? My Mid 2010 Mac Pro says Model 5,1

This is from my cMP 5,1

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: Mac Pro

Model Identifier: MacPro5,1

Processor Name: 6-Core Intel Xeon

Processor Speed: 2.93 GHz

Number of Processors: 2

Total Number of Cores: 12

L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB

L3 Cache (per Processor): 12 MB

Memory: 64 GB

Boot ROM Version: MP51.007F.B03

SMC Version (system): 1.39f11

SMC Version (processor tray): 1.39f11

So SMC seems slightly different.

But of note, though it is running 10.13.6 just fine, I did not Install 10.13 on the cMP, I just booted it off a Clone of 10.13.6 done on my iMac.

I did not want to run the 10.13 installer on the cMP itself because it changes the Firmware, which would have several drawbacks for me, but see this...

It's me again. Different day, same problem.

Purchased High Sierra installer, tried running installer and got the same results as if I were running the stub file.

Just for giggles I did what it said; shut down, restart holding the button yada yada yada. Same result - nothing.

Here are the screen shots from System Profiler.

Is that the correct info for a 4, 1 that was flashed to a 5,1? I get the sinking feeling that the flash upgrade didn't work 100% and I'm stuck. Or maybe it has something to do with the video card.

Thanks for your help in advance.

My mistake on the identifier, it does say 5,1.

But why will it run 10.12 when MacTracker says the max OS is 10.11? I can boot into an external drive that has 10.13 on it with no problem. When I run the High Sierra installer, it says "To install macOS High Sierra, a firmware update is required." I followed the instructions, waited for the power light to blink and heard the long tone but it still didn't work. I did it twice, thinking I might have released the button too soon. The installer file I have is 19.9MB big. I've read in the forum that it is supposed to be bigger. I'm confused.

I'd jump to Mojave or maybe Catalina but I don't have any of the compatible or sort of compatible GPU's listed on Apple's web page.

Your 2009 MacPro was initially a 4.1 but at some time the firmware was 'flashed' to make it a 5.1.

this then made it appear as a 2010-2012 MacPro so it could install Sierra and High Sierra.

With a suitable' Metal' graphics card it can install Mojave. It cannot install Catalina.

If you have the 19Mb stub file then double-click on it to see if it will now download the full

5.25GB installer.

Thanks for the info but my problem is CCC is $40. I'd end up using it once so it isn't cost effective for me. The other problem is, if I do clone the external drive to the internal one I'll wipe out all the info on that drive. To me the simplest solution is to get an actual High Sierra install app/file and do it that way.

Unfortunately, it looks like Apple (in their infinite wisdom) has taken away the ability for us end users to download the older operating systems. They used to allow that, now I guess they think it's not worth it.

Guess I'm stuck using Sierra. If you know of anyway/place I can get a High Sierra installer, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks again for your help

Thanks for the reply. Most of the info you told me I already knew. Didn't know about not running Catalina though. I have tried numerous times to use the 19Mb installer and keep getting the same result. High Sierra is not available on the App Store. At least not to me. because I already have the stub file, it wants me to open it (from the App Store) which leads me back to the initial problem. I believe I need the actual full 5.25GB installer to make it work.

Thanks for your help though.

I know that you have other things and users to take care of, so I appreciate the time you're taking to help me with this.

You're right, the SMC is not the same. Do you think that could be the problem?

On the firmware upgrade install, do I let go of the power button immediately after the tone/light indicator or wait until the logo and progress bar show up?

I'm not a noob at computers, I just haven't had to do firmware updates in a couple of decades. Is there a listing somewhere that would tell me what exactly my boot ROM and SMC versions should be?

I've had/used Apple computers since 1985, starting with a IIe then IIGS transferring to the Mac when they dropped support for the Apple II line.

Again, thanks in advance for your help
