I updated to macOS Catalina dnd now when I want to use my Microsoft word, excel, powerpoint, etc., I get a message saying that "Microsoft Word" needs to be updated. Do I need to buy a new license or what is happening? I can't use any of the programs and that is a problem!

It depends on what version you currently have.

Microsoft Office 2016 (updated), Office 2019, and Office 365 all work with Catalina. Older 32 bit versions of Office do not work with Catalina.
