I have dragged the Draw Mask effect onto my clip and the adjustable parameters have appeared in the Inspector but when I click on the image in the Viewer, nothing appears. I believe there should be a red dot.
Also the cursor remains its normal triangular self instead of appearing like a pen.
Any idea what I am doing wrong?
Well it's a real mystery. I had the clip selected and nothing would work until you mentioned the yellow box! Then as if by magic, evrything started functioning normally.

You must have stopped incanting as I just came back to FCP X to find that I could no longer get the pen to appear.
However, after fiddling around for a minute or so I decided to shutdown and reopen FCP X and that did the trick.
Is the box around the draw mask yellow?
Make sure the effect is selected in the Video inspector
Yes, everything is as shown in your screenshot but my cursor just displays the usual arrow head shape.
I have enlarged the cursor for better visibility but that shouldn't cause a problem?

The clip has to be select in the project. Sometimes when the box is white the pen will still work, but I think that’s an anomaly.
It's the incantation that does it.
