Connecting my Macbook to my iMac using thunderbolt3

Good day,

I have a MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015) only one usb-c port and a iMac (21.5-inch, 2017).

I would like to use the iMac as a display for the MacBook but when I hit the command F2 button combination a error comes up saying something like thunderbolt accessories are not supported on this mac

how would I be able to connect the 2

No, it doesn't have the capability of any Thunderbolt protocol. That's why you're getting the error message, "an error comes up saying something like thunderbolt accessories are not supported on this Mac," because it's a true statement.

Note: You would need at least a MacBook Pro 13" 2016 or newer to get Thunderbolt 3 capability.
