Connecting New MacBook to 2017 iMac

I'd like to use my 2017 iMac as a display for my 2021 MacBook Pro. I have connected the two with a thunderbolt to a USB-c and I can not for the life of me figure out why it isn't working. I looked online and think its connected the correct way. Is this even possible? thanks

can I use a mid 2010 iMac as a display? I want to use my 27in iMac (mid2010 running OS X El Capitan) as a target display for my MacBook Pro 2019. Connecting my Macbook to my iMac using thunderbolt3 Good day, I have a MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015) only one usb-c port and a iMac (21.5-inch, 2017). Not supported for MacBook Pro after 2019 or running later than Catalina.

Obtain a Monitor or use a TV set instead.

Use your iMac as a display with target display mode - Apple Support
