icloud desktop document folder disappeared

A couple days ago when booted my ios macbook up that icloud couldn't connect and when I clicked on the message it took me to icloud in preferences and asked me to enter my Apple ID. Did that and nothing happened; however EVERY time I rebooted I got that message same result. So I logged out of my account and logged back in the folder under icloud both desktop and document folders are completely empty. How do I fix this?

I orignally logged out of icloud which removed everything in Documents and Desktop, becasue everytime I boot up my mabook I get the message "This Mac can’t connect to iCloud because of a problem with “<my apple id>"" - I go to icloud preferences - enter my apple id password and then nothing happens until I bring my macbook down and boot up again - get the same dialogue - not sure what's going on - but I'm not going logout out of icoud again, cause it took 2 days for everthing to come back (and I have a 1Tb fiber optic network connection). Any thoughts

Hello ricknahass,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities! I understand you signed out of your iCloud account on your Mac and now your iCloud desktop and documents folders are empty.

I'm happy to assist you with this.

Let's check your iCloud preferences to make sure you have iCloud Drive enabled. This will help determine if your documents are located in that folder. Follow the steps in this article to see if your documents show in iCloud Drive: Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive

Best Regards.
