Can I use Boot Camp to install Windows 10 on an external drive?

Hello,

I'd like to buy a new MacBook Pro 15" and use it for home and work. I already own an older (Late 2011) MacBook Pro 13" and obviously cannot install Windows 10 on it using Boot Camp. Also, I own a 2019 Dell i7 w/ 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD.

I'd like to get rid of the Windows machine and just have a newer MacBook i9. I've found a 512GB i9 w/ 16GB but am concerned about splitting the 512GB to the install Boot Camp partition. So, my question is: Can I use Boot Camp to install Windows 10 on an external drive and preserve my MacBook's drive space?

It would be handy to simply leave the external drive at work and carry the Mac back and forth.

TIA,

Bill
