Update Old MacBook Pro

I have a mid-2009 13" MBP with OS X 10.7 Lion. I know I can't get Catalina, but it should be compatible up to El Capitan. I can't seem to download the update from the App Store. Can someone point me in the right direction?

update late 2011 MacBook Pro 13" from 10.12.6 I just miss the cutoff to update automatically to Catalina (or whatever it is on Apple Support page) but would like to update to at least 10.13. Does anyone know how that is done? Do I purchase software? Thank you!
