startup disk must be formatted in a single volume

I've inherited a MacBook and want to use boot camp. When opening the Boot Camp Assistant I get the error message "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows"

The hard drive has had partitions created by it's previous user and I haven't been able to remove them through Disk Utility. I get the error 'Checking prerequisites for resizing Logical-Physical volume stack

The requested size change for the target disk or a related disk is too small. Please try a different disk or partition, or make a larger change.

Operation failed…'

Any ideas or help with how to do this either through disk utility or the terminal would be amazing : )

Assuming this is what you are asking about...

  • Step 1

diskutil eraseVolume fat32 BOOTCAMP disk0s4

  • Step 2

Run Applications -> Utilities -> Bootcamp Assistant and click on Remove/Restore.
