Mac Mail 12.4 and Earthlink Web Mail

Just bought a new Mac with the new Mojave system. Now, when I go to Earthlink web mail and clear out my mailbox space, all of those emails are removed from my Mac Mail also. This never used to happen. How can I clear out my mailbox online, but, keep my email on my computer?

If you are using IMAP protocol your emails are synchronized with the server and all devices accessing the account.

If you are using the older POP protocol the emails are not stored on the server and are not synchronized.

You can move the emails you want to keep to a folder on your Mac that is not synchronized before deleting them from the server.

That makes sense. My laptop is connected to Earthlink as a POP account. Can I make my Earthlink connection on my new iMac a POP account instead of IMAP, or, is that not determined by me? If I have to manually save every email I don't want deleted, I will be wasting a lot of time!

Thanks!
