It no longer works for me to hold down the Delete key and delete one letter after another. Instead, it makes me press it each time in order to delete a letter.
Obviously, I can deal with it by doing it one at a time or highlighting and then hitting delete, but do any of you know of a way to fix this?

It may be your repeat key settings. Go to System Preferences > Keyboard and move the Key Repeat slider to "fast" and the "delay until repeat" to "short".
