Ultra Slow Mail App on MBP with Tahoe 26

Mail App on MBP (Intel) with Tahoe is intolerably slow downloading new emails. New iphone has them all. Do I need to somehow reinstall Apple Mail to fix? Also, I just added an MS Exchange/Outlook mailbox to the mix of accounts. But it works great on iPhone and awful on MBP so I suspect it is not the issue.
