The App Switcher - also known as Exposé in iPadOS 26 - is unchanged in its appearance from iPadOS 18.x.

  • View All Open Windows/Apps (Exposé): Swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen and pause in the middle before lifting your finger. This displays a "bird's-eye view" of all open applications and their associated windows.
  • Switch Apps: In the Exposé view, swipe left or right to browse through the different apps. Tap the window you want to open.
  • Quickly Switch Between Recently Used Apps: Swipe left or right along the very bottom edge of the screen to quickly jump to the last-used app without opening the full Exposé view.
  • Close an App: In the Exposé view, a single app or group of apps can be closed by swiping up on the app preview/card.

If your iPad is not operating as expected, try a forced-restart - as this will often clear an isolated or post-update software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

Under iPadOS 26, pressing and holding CMD key along with TAB key allows you to cycle through your open Apps - and will show a dock-representation of your currently open (running) App windows while the TAB key is held:

  • Press and hold the Command key, then press Tab until you reach the app you want to open.

This differs from the App Switcher (Exposé) page that is summoned with an upward-swipe from the bottom edge of the iPad touch-screen - or, if you are using a TrackPad, swiping-upwards with three fingers.

To the best of my knowledge, there isn't an available keyboard shortcut to open the Exposé page directly from a an external keyboard.
