macOS autocorrects Los Angeles, then marks it as misspelled

In the last couple days MacOS is now autocorrecting Los Angeles to Los Ángeles in most apps. I can't figure out what started this or how to turn it off. It autocorrects then tells me "Ángeles" is spelled wrong. How do I fix this?!

Notes:

I do not have alternative keyboards installed. I don't have other language packs installed.

You can alter the autocorrect settings here: Get typing suggestions and correct mistakes on Mac - Apple Support

The local dictionary used to be somewhere under ~/Library/Spelling/LocalDictionary — but I don’t have a macOS 26 system to check that detail. You can open the text file there (using BBEdit) and make changes directly, or can specifically accept or remove existing spelling overrides using the GUI as mentioned in the link.

Los Ángeles can be correct. If referencing music, there’s an album Los Ángeles. Elsewhere, Los Ángeles is the capital of the Bío Bío province of Chile.

From the linked info:

  • Ignore misspellings: Control-click a highlighted word, then choose Ignore Spelling. The word is ignored if it occurs again in the document (it’s highlighted in other documents).
  • Add words to the spelling dictionary: Control-click a highlighted word, then choose Learn Spelling. The word won’t be flagged as misspelled in any document.

Los Angeles is the correct spelling for the location I live in. It has always been correct - this is a new issue since the last update (best I can tell). So - for me, this is completely incorrect and should not be autocorrecting.

The link is great if you want to just turn it on/off, but nothing that I can find that lets you fix whatever is going on here with this one spelling. I don't see anything in the GUI that would allow me to find the random new autocorrection and delete it. I'm not keen on messing around in the Library - and if I do, will the next update undo what I corrected?

Is this unique to me? Anyone else having this issue? Is this a "contact Apple" situation?
